well, where to start.
History
built by Chery in China from 2008-2015, prototype displayed in 2006.
designed by Italian design house Pininfarina (head designer unknown) as a 5 door hatch or 4 door sedan.
Exterior - 8/10
Australian market vehicles were imported by Ateco Industries, and all 5 door hatchbacks.
certainly not offensive in the styling stakes, compared to other Chinese cars, hidden rear door handles are a neat touch.
only thing lacking is a rear wiper.
headlights do a good job. only runs cheap H7 bulbs, so easily upgradable if i desire.
Interior - 5/10
holy shit!
whilst the layout of the dials and switches is fine almost, the boot release button is in an odd spot to the right of the hazard switch in the centre stack and the fuel door release is under the dash on the right hand side, however the materials used are the hardest material known to man short of a diamond.
basically, the interior is good, but not great.
Audio is only so-so. MP3 i haven’t got around to making work yet. assuming it does.
seats are covered in “leather” supposedly, very hard and shiny, very slippery.
heater works well
wipers do an okay job.
only one decent cupholder capable of holding a coke can.
Handling - 3/10
absolutely woeful!
comical at best. try driving on a bumpy road at 100km/h (62mph) with very little body control
it was funny and scary at the same time.
i’m looking into putting new shockers into it.
Steering - 5/10
very light, too light honestly, not variable either. very light at highway speeds.
overall not great
Engine - 5/10
noisey and need to be revved away from a stop.
very little low end torque.
i’m too used to putting the Lancer in 2nd and using the torque. can’t do than in the Chery
as for fuel economy, i’ve not really paid much attention to it yet.
Brakes - 7/10
discs front and rear and yes they work.
Features - 7/10
it has stability control, power windows, power mirrors, A/C, remote central locking, ABS
nothing exceptional for the day when it was new.
Overall - 6.5/10
would i buy a Chinese car again?
yes.
looking at a Geely MK next.
any questions, ask away!
they even looked at importing a newer Chery, but nothing came of it.

Someone should sell a cheap Chinese car over here for like $7000. It would be an instant hit, so many people that can finally afford a new car

Good review.
You know, I actually think it is a very decent looking car, especially from the front and rear 3/4 views. Good review.
Shame the interior is uncomfortable and hard. It doesn’t look bad in the photos but definitely a lot of hard plastics. I will say it looks more 2008 than the exterior.
The Chery does have something my Cruze doesn’t have and it probably cost more new and is only 2 years older - rear disk brakes. The Cruze came with rear drums standard on the base model.
Weird about not having a rear wiper. And the trunk release position may be weird but my Cruze doesn’t have one at all. It has a dash mounted lock/unlock button though in a similar place as your trunk release.

Probably not. Look how many manufactures have gone away from tiny cars because they’re not selling. The vast majority of consumers would rather spend 7k on a 20 year old SUV with 200k on it than some tiny Chinese car.

Was this the first of the breed to be designed specifically to meet NCAP tests? An evolution, as the early models didn’t give a damn and then they kind of halfway gave a damn. At least death isn’ t certain if you strike anything with more mass than a ping pong ball. One day these might be a historical curiosity, like an 80s Hyundai.

I think it was the first but the Australian neap never tested one

Sounds decent enough for everyday transport! I actually think the styling is quite nice! Some new suspension would likely smarten up the handling a bit for sure, especially if everything is tired...
